Equity vs Equality

“Resist when the world tries to convince you otherwise.” ― Nic Stone

When it comes to the workplace, equity and equality are two concepts that are often used interchangeably, but they are not the same thing. Equality means treating everyone the same, while equity means giving everyone what they need to be successful.

The goal of equity is to achieve equality. Part of the challenge of equity is that different people have different understandings of fairness. For some people, treating people differently than others is inherently unfair and reproduces the same inequality that we intend to eliminate.
