How are you recognizing Hispanic American Heritage Month?

“If you have a chance to accomplish something that will make things better for people coming behind you, and you don’t do that, you are wasting your time on this earth.” - Roberto Clemente

Happy Hispanic American Heritage Month!

Every year from September 15 through October 15 we have the opportunity to celebrate the diverse Hispanic American culture in our country. Why do we celebrate? As we've talked about before, and you will hear from me again, representation matters. Visibility matters. This month gives us an opportunity to highlight and honor the countless Hispanic traditions, language dialects, foods, and cultures alive in our nation today.

So how can you get involved and celebrate this Hispanic Heritage Month?

Learn the histories of Hispanic Americans:
Hispanic American history is American history. From land acquisition to labor rights to immigration to social justice, there is no America without Hispanic Americans. What do you know about how Hispanic Americans have shaped American identity? As diverse as this community is, history is still a shared story and it's on all of us to learn it.

Get out in the community:
Heritage Month means celebration! There is nothing better than learning from experience and giving back. See what local events are happening. Volunteer your time. Make a donation to an organization whose values you respect. See what events are taking place at your work. Get involved in celebrating the cultures of the millions of Hispanic Americans who call this country home.

Stand up and speak up:
As I say in my allyship programs, allyship means speaking up even when you would rather stay quiet, in whatever way you do it: sharing social media posts, having conversations with family and friends, correcting misinformation as it spreads, or showing up in solidarity at community events. Celebrating cultures means more than engaging in the joy. It means using your words and actions to demonstrate what real inclusion means.

Heritage months like this one remind us that we can all come together, learn from one another, respect each other's traditions, and celebrate as a community. A community all looking for the same things: acceptance, inclusion, and belonging for all.

Do the work

This week, I commit to making an effort to learn more about Hispanic American cultures, contributions, and traditions, and to get involved with any activities possible.

Join me for a free webinar

Welcome to the next generation!

Join me for my free October webinar to learn how we can all successfully navigate generational differences at work. In this highly interactive and engaging program, I use news clips, commercials, music, and cultural touchpoints to navigate attendees through a world of inter-generational communication and changing dialogue. We learn the history of the five generations in the workplace, how each generation puts its own unique stamp on their organization, and how best to recognize, engage with, and grow from the challenges presented by these differences. The goal, as always, is to build a workplace centered on inclusion and belonging for all of us.

What my clients say

“Michelle is one of the most compelling DEI educators I have ever experienced, and her words have had a powerful and enduring impact on my life. She is a gifted storyteller who has a unique way of personalizing her own experiences and those of marginalized people, and it leads to greater empathy and compassion in her audience. Michelle spoke to our entire Legal Department during our annual summit, and it was one of the most popular sessions in the entire program. She is truly one of a kind, and her program will change the hearts and minds of any organization that is lucky enough to have her."
