What Does it Mean to Thrive at Work?

"Don't make the world let you feel that you have to look a certain way to be brilliant. And no, you don't have to speak a certain way to be brilliant. But you do have to spread your gift around the planet in a way that is authentically you." – Beyoncé

How We Thrive at Work

Last week was a whirlwind for Inclusion Nation! Chicago, Boston, Los Angeles - including a photo shoot at the Walt Disney Concert Hall and dinner with Zendaya*** - our first exhibit booth at the NALP Annual Education Conference, and many powerful and impactful conversations all week long. I couldn't be more grateful for the privilege of connecting with so many amazing folks, just like you! Inclusion Nation is thriving.

Thriving at work matters to me. It is the core of what I talk about for a living. Thriving at work means that we are succeeding professionally and finding purpose, growth, and fulfillment. When we thrive in our workplace, we can experience a profound sense of meaning, which translates into tangible benefits that enhance both personal and organizational success.

So, what is thriving at work? And what are the benefits? Here are three ways for everyone to get started.

1. Purpose: How do we find purpose in our work? Autonomy, connection, social justice, and equity are key factors. Having a road map for your career, even if it's only two or three years out, matters as well. When we feel like we have a sense of purpose at work it allows us to show up authentically and can increase our purpose, creativity, and innovation.

2. Well-Being: Employees who feel like they are succeeding, learning, and growing are more likely to experience a more profound sense of well-being. Having a healthy work-life balance that aligns with our values and goals allows us to feel cared for and engages a more motivated workforce.

3. Growth Mindset: Having resilience, seeking out challenges, and embracing opportunities for professional development, are all benefits of the growth mindset. How can leaders build that? By fostering environments with supportive cultures that value belonging and authenticity while tangibly recognizing and rewarding contributions.

Thriving at work benefits everyone. Now let's get out there and do exactly that.

*** Zendaya was at a private party at my restaurant but I think it counts. Now go see Challengers and support tennis (my favorite sport) AND movies for grown-ups!

Do the work

This week, I commit to taking the time to reflect on what it means to thrive in my organization and  my career. I commit to setting clean and achievable goals for myself that provide purpose and direction.

Six Steps to Achieving Authentic Success at Work

Authentic is the Word of the Year!

And yet, in a world of social media bots, Photoshop fails, and generative AI, what does it really mean to show up authentically in our lives and at the place where we spend most of our days, at work? Based on my forthcoming book, I'll teach you my six steps to claiming real authentic success at work - at every level and for every generation.

I'll share my own career journey - the highs and lows - and showcase how embracing your identities, values, and life stories is the real secret to career success. Then, I'll teach my six steps to THRIVE at work: Tell Your Truth, High Five Your Impostor, Rewrite Your Road Map, Identify Your Champions, Value Your Self and Your Voice, and Embrace Your Community. Through storytelling, interactive discussions, case studies, and real-life examples, your attendees will leave with the certain knowledge of how to show up authentically and open doors to trust, loyalty, and enduring success in the workplace and beyond.

What my clients say

"Michelle brought the right energy, passion, and information our organization needed! How storytelling approach and interactive presentation style kept attendees engaged and intrigued. The feedback was overwhelming positive. Those who attended the session appreciated how Michelle discuss topics that are often difficult to have in the workplace. Michelle helped to enhance the ongoing dialogue at our organization around systemic racism and bias; more that we've ever had in the past. We would love to welcome Michelle back to host a follow-up discussion!"
