“We need to remember across generations that there is as much to learn as there is to teach." -- Gloria Steinem

Working Across Generations

For over a decade I have been talking about the different generations at work. Traditionalists. Boomers. Generation X. Millenials. Generation Z. We all know the different generations and the inevitable stereotypes that go along with them. But do we really understand where our colleagues from different generations are coming from and what they value?

With eight days to go before a generation-defining U.S. election, understanding why and how the different generations got to this point is crucial for building inclusion at work. Yes, U.S. generations are artificial boundaries covering millions, but each generation does have some specific approaches based on key moments in their lives. Where were you when the Challenger exploded? When Kennedy was assassinated? When 9-11 happened? When COVID shut down our world? Were you in college? Just started working? A new parent? A recent retiree? A child?

Key moments can define generations, especially at impressionable ages. And what those moments do is build different lenses for different generations. How can we understand those lenses? How can we improve empathy across generations? And how do we ensure that everyone's needs are met and perspectives are recognized?

Guess what? I have some answers for all of those questions.

Sign up and join me tomorrow at 12pm Eastern for my FREE webinar, From Woodstock to TikTok: How to Work With Every Generation, and walk away with practical tools for how to work across generations. I'll have videos, music, stories, and practical lessons for change. From Woodstock and TikTok and beyond. Take a break from the election news and join me for 45 minutes of learning and fun.

Hope to see you all there.

Join me for a free webinar

Welcome to the next generation.

It's almost here! Join me tomorrow for my free October webinar, From Woodstock to TikTok, and learn how to successfully navigate generational differences at work. In this highly interactive and engaging program, I use news clips, commercials, music, and cultural touchpoints to navigate attendees through a world of inter-generational communication and changing dialogue. We learn the history of the generations in the workplace, how each generation puts its own unique stamp on their organizations, and how best to recognize, engage with, and grow from the challenges presented by these differences. The goal, as always, is to build a workplace centered on inclusion and belonging for all of us.

What my clients say

“Back in 2021, I opened up one of my favorite blogs (Ask A Manager) and read a fascinating article that was guest-written by Michelle. It was not just about the “what” but the HOW of allyship. Michelle’s unique perspective was immediately interesting to me, as so many of us who want to be allies struggle with applying allyship concepts to nuanced, real-life situations. In 2023 I finally had the opportunity to work with Michelle on an allyship training for my team. Her approach and style was warm, inviting, and direct — for my group, this was perfect and extremely refreshing! I look forward to working with Michelle again in the future. "
