Understanding Intersectionality
“It is not our differences that divide us. It is our inability to recognize, accept, and celebrate those differences.” – Audre Lorde
Intersectionality refers to the interconnected nature of different identities, such as race, gender, sexuality, and how they interact to create unique experiences of oppression or privilege. In the context of LGBTQ+ identities, intersectionality recognizes that individuals may experience discrimination not only based on their sexual orientation or gender identity, but also based on other aspects of their identity, such as race or socioeconomic status. Recognizing intersectionality when discussing LGBTQ+ issues ensures that the experiences and needs of all individuals are being recognized and addressed.
