Are you okay? Managing Our Well-Being Inside & Outside of Work

"Almost everything will work again if you unplug it for a few minutes ... Including you." ― Anne Lamott

Managing Our Well-Being

Good morning from beautiful California! I'm here for both work and fun which means I've had many chances on this trip to stare out at the Pacific Ocean. This island girl will always be a child of the ocean. Returning to water, whether a lake in Michigan or a beach in Malibu, brings me contentment, peace, and joy. It is how I heal.

How do you heal? As we enter the spring season of growth and rebirth for many around the world, how do you find those spaces of well-being at work? How do you find your contentment and joy? If you're still looking, or you need a reminder, here are my three pieces of advice for you:

Frequent Check-Ins with You: Checking in with our team is great, but more importantly we have to check in with ourselves. Set aside time to connect with yourself and learn from your physical, mental and emotional health. Make it a frequent and common practice so you can instinctively know when it's time to rest and recharge.

Ask for Help: What does every great team leader have in common? They are willing to ask for help and delegate responsibility when needed. We are not in this alone. Everyone needs support. Don't be afraid to ask for help. And you'll be wonderfully surprised at the willingness of others to step up.

Prioritize Well-Being: It's so hard, especially depending on your stage of life, to prioritize your peace. Choosing to do so is essential to our well-being success. When we take the time to prioritize self-care in our daily lives it makes a profound impact on our well-being at work. Actions like making sure we get adequate sleep, involving yourself in the community, moving around each day, finding hobbies that you can grow with, and seeking out activities which bring us a calm moment in our otherwise very busy days. Close your eyes and ask yourself. "What are you doing outside of work today that will bring a smile to your face?"

You've got this. And when in doubt, take a moment for yourself. Take a breath. Ask for help. Seek a mentor. Go on that walk. Plan that dream vacation. Spend that extra hour with your friends. Do whatever it is that helps you to thrive, both inside and outside of the workplace.

Check out the Inc. article below for advice from myself and three other female founders on how to prioritize your well-being this year.

Do the work

This week, I commit to evaluating my personal and professional well-being, determining ways in which I can engage in self-care, and taking small actions to improve my quality of life.

What Everyone Should Know and Do About Imposter Syndrome

Do you ever walk into your workplace and feel out of place? Do you ever feel that no matter how perfect you do a job, it is never perfect enough? Do you constantly feel that someday, someone, somewhere will stand up, point their finger at you, and expose you for who you truly know you are – a fraud?

This is impostor syndrome. But what causes it? How do our workplaces perpetuate it? And what can we do to transform it? I will join you for an interactive, engaging workshop on impostor syndrome. We are going to work together to battle those feelings of exclusion, connect with the values we bring into the workplace, and lean into the absolute certainty that we belong here.

What my clients say

“Michelle came to us highly recommended by a number of other law firms and she did not disappoint. Her presentation was thoughtful, informative, engaging, riveting, timely, and powerful. Feedback from our lawyers and staff was uniformly and enthusiastically positive. Michelle delivered an important message on diversity and implicit bias issues in the workplace and in society in general, and how we as individuals and as an organization can take the necessary steps to foster a more inclusive world."
